Stickers or UV printing

Which option is best for personalized sets made from LEGO bricks.

Do you have any questions about this topic, or are you interested in custom models made from building blocks?

Why is personalization so important when it comes to a custom set of LEGO® bricks?

Personalization turns an ordinary set into a special gift. Especially when it comes to custom sets made from LEGO® bricks for businesses, it’s not just about building a model. It’s about bringing a brand, a product, or a message to life.
A logo on a brick, a name on a minifigure, or a technical detail on a model can make all the difference. That’s exactly why many projects raise the question: Should you print on LEGO® bricks or decorate them with stickers?

What are some ways to customize LEGO bricks?

Basically, there are two options: printing or applying stickers.
LEGO bricks are printed using UV printing. In this process, the design is printed directly onto the brick, and the special ink is cured using UV light. The result looks high-quality, clean, and, above all, durable.
With stickers, the design is printed on a film and then applied to the brick. In some cases, this can be a practical solution—or even the only way—to achieve customization in a cost-effective manner.
In our experience, the right choice depends heavily on the model, the shape of the bricks, the number of stones, and the desired result. So there isn’t one solution that fits all. But there are very clear trends.

A major advantage is that we can handle UV printing right here in-house. This gives us flexibility, allows us to produce even small batches, and makes last-minute adjustments much easier.

In addition to UV printing and stickers, there are other printing methods, such as pad printing. This method is also used by LEGO itself. However, due to the higher setup costs, this method is usually only cost-effective for very large production runs and therefore is rarely used in individual corporate projects.

For small- to medium-volume runs, UV printing simply offers the best balance between effort, cost, and results.

What are the advantages of UV printing for personalized sets?

For company logos, names, signs, product details, or small graphic elements, we usually recommend UV printing. That’s because when it comes to relatively small details, applying stickers can often be a bit tricky. Above all, a bricks that’s been printed directly on simply looks more premium than one with a sticker applied afterward.
Another advantage is its high durability. Thanks to UV curing, the print adheres perfectly to the LEGO® bricks and remains intact even with frequent handling or mechanical stress.
In addition, UV printing also allows multi-layer printing. For example, white underprints, color prints, and additional finishes can be combined with gloss varnish. This makes it possible to highlight specific areas or create special surface effects.
Of course, UV printing is also possible across multiple bricks. This is particularly exciting when a logo, graphic, or design element needs to span a larger area. A good example of this application can be seen in our case study featuring the Samsung circuit board. The circuit traces extend across multiple tiles. Since the printing was applied to the tiles after they had already been assembled, all the printed patterns align perfectly.
While this does involve more steps, it’s precisely these kinds of details that often make a personalized LEGO® set especially valuable.

When is it a good idea to put stickers on LEGO bricks?

As good as UV printing is, it can’t do everything.
Stickers can be a good alternative for round bricks, complex shapes, or very large surfaces. They can also be a cost-effective option for very large quantities or when many individual applications are required. However, to achieve a clean result, stickers must be placed very precisely. A sticker applied even slightly askew stands out immediately and quickly looks unprofessional.
Please note: The color of a sticker often does not match the color of the LEGO® brick 100 % exactly. While a transparent sticker might seem like an easy solution at first glance, it is not always ideal for colored bricks. The background may show through, causing the printed colors to appear different.

Conclusion: UV printing or stickers—which solution is better?

For high-quality, personalized sets made from LEGO® bricks, UV printing is usually the better choice. Especially for company logos, names, branding elements, or visible product details, direct printing ensures a cleaner and more professional result.
Stickers still have their place, however, when the shape, surface area, or quantity of parts makes them the best choice. Ultimately, it’s not about deciding that one technique is inherently better than another, but about choosing the right solution for your specific model.
This is exactly where our role comes in: We evaluate what makes technical sense, what looks high-quality, and what best suits your project.

Here are the key benefits of UV printing at a glance:

  • A high-quality, professional look with no visible film edges
  • Optimal adhesion and high durability
  • Excellent lightfastness
  • Multi-layer printing is possible
  • Finishing with a matte or glossy varnish
  • Even small quantities can be produced cost-effectively
  • In-house UV printing allows for flexible adjustments and short-notice changes.
